Meet the luckiest unlucky man on Earth
Meet Frane Selak, the man who cheated death 7 times. He was lucky to survive each of his accidents, but so many almost deadly events in a lifetime are no sign of luck. His fortune did change eventually, find out here how.
Frane Selak is an 88 years old music teacher from Croatia who has a very interesting life story. He faced death 7 times and escaped each time.
His first brush with death was in 1962. He was traveling by train from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik in January and the train flipped off the tracks, crashing into an ice-cold river. 17 people drowned in that terrible accident, but Frane Selak got away with a broken arm and hypothermia.
The next time he traveled, just one year later, since he was no longer a fan of trains, he decided to take the plane. But sadly, this wasn't either a good experience. Due to a malfunction, the plane's door popped open and poor Selak was thrown out without a parachute. He somehow landed on a haystack and woke up later in the hospital with minor injuries. The plane, however, ended up crashing and 19 people died in the accident.
3 years later, he took the bus which turned out to be just as dangerous. It skidded off the road and fell into a river, killing four of the passengers. Selak, however, was not one of them, getting away with a few cuts and bruises.
In 1970 he was driving his own car when it suddenly caught fire. Thankfully, he managed to get out before the fuel tank exploded.
In 1973, he had other car troubles, only this time it was worse. Due to a fuel pump malfunction, the engine was doused with hot oil and caused flames to shoot out through the air vents. Even though his hair was singed, Selak got away unharmed once again.
Believe it or not, his "luck" wasn't going to change soon. In 1995, he was hit by a bus in Zagreb and got away with minor injuries.
The following year, he avoided collision with a truck and drove into a guardrail, which cracked under the force of his car. Because he wasn't wearing a seatbelt, he was thrown out his car and he caught hold of a tree, while his vehicle fell 300 ft into a gorge.
During his life he was married 5 times, so we can assume he wasn't too lucky in love, either. That, until he met his 5th wife, obvs.
2003 was a good year for Selak because not only he got married to the woman who turned out to be the one, but he also won $1 million in the lottery.
He bought 2 houses and a boat and gave away the rest of the money to his relatives and friends. "All I need at my age is my Katarina. Money would not change anything," he said.
When asked whether he felt lucky or unlucky, Mr. Selak said "I never thought I was lucky to survive all my brushes with death. I thought I was unlucky to be in them in the first place." However, he does feel like the luckiest man in the world, but that's got nothing to with his death brushes, or his money, but with his loving wife. "When she arrived I knew then that I really did have a charmed, blessed life."
There are many lessons to be learned from this unbelievable story: Love is what matters the most; your luck can change; but most importantly, never ever take the same train, plane or bus with mister Selak.
